Dandy Roll - hollow cylinder of wire gauze, which consolidates the wet web on the wire and may produce a watermark.

Debris - paper dust which finds its way onto the offset printing blanket or plate.

Deckle - the untrimmed edge of the web of paper as it comes off the machine. (Also used to denote the width of the web).

De-inking - removal of printing ink and mechanical impurities by flotation and/or washing pulped waste paper before recycling.

Die Cuttability - suitability of paper and board for die cutting into blanks of a given shape.

Dimensional Stability - ability of paper to retain its dimensions and its shape (a) despite changes in its moisture content under the influence of, for example, variations in the surrounding atmosphere or (b) despite variations of the physical and mechanical stresses during printing and converting operations or use.

Display Papers and Boards - wide range of coated paper and boards used for display and exhibition purposes. Some grades may be metal lined or laminated.

Doctor - thin blade of wood, metal or plastic, placed against rolls on the machine to keep them clean and smooth.

Double Bump - application of two layers of ink to achieve greater opacity or more intense colour.

Dry Strength - mechanical strength of a dry paper sheet (includes tensile strength, tearing resistance, folding and folding endurance).

Duplex Board - a multi ply construction of a board made predominately from mechanical pulp but with a bleached chemical pulp liner.
